Unstitched Series

Unstitched Series, What's that about? by Amanda Morris

If you have taken your time to browse this site, you have probably stumbled upon my Unstitched Series, and I wanted to take a moment and go a little more in depth in what that series is all about.

I have always been interested in panoramas. I love getting out there and taking multiple pictures of a place, capturing a wider scope of the scene around me.  If you get it just right, all the photos will line up perfectly and you can create something really amazing.  Somewhere in my education someone introduced me to David Hockney's body of work called "Joiners".

These photography collages immediately inspired me.  I loved how the images were not edited to align perfectly, or manipulated so that the exposure for each picture was the same.  There was movement and imperfection, and it changed on how I thought of our perception of the world around us.  I started making my own "joiners" and played with distance between photographs. (For some of the photographs I would stand really close to the subject I was capturing, and for others I would stand really far.)  And from this idea I created the Unstitched Series:

After exploring this idea for several months during my Post Baccalaureate year at Studio Art Centers International (SACI), I took it a step further by adding actual depth to the images.  I printed the images on a very large scale and then cut them to pieces.  I mounted them on pieces of foam core so that parts of the photograph could be raised or lowered.  Here are my two final pieces at my very first art show:

So there you have it!  All the images from the series are available to purchase here.

I'd love to know some artists that inspire you, so leave a comment below!

Be well,
